GAHARU

The year 2021 sees UTMH embarking on a brand new, exciting venture – Gaharu Inoculation and Oil Distillation Project. Also known as Agarwood, Gaharu is one of the world’s most expensive and sought-after natural raw materials. Because of its unique fragrance, the resin-embedded wood is often used as an ingredient in producing incense and perfumes. It is also believed to have medicinal properties and said to be particularly effective in relieving digestive and respiratory problems, among others.

The Johor-based project began with the inoculation of 500 mature trees between January and March 2021, followed by the Cut and Oil Distillation Process which is expected to take place in 2022.
